National Honor Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nations leading organization for recognizing exemplary high school students. Since its founding in 1921, the ever-expanding NHS network has served to honor students demonstrating excellence in the areas of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. With more the one million members nationwide, NHS continues to highlight student achievement while challenging students to take a lead role in service activities that benefit schools and communities.
ACHS NHS
In the fall of 2010, the bang of a gavel inducted the founding 37 Adolfo Camarillo High School students into the schools first National Honor Society. Within months of the first meeting, Honor Society members began organizing fundraising programs to send 100 portable showers to the troops stationed overseas. By implementing fundraisers such as early-morning hot chocolate sales, root beer float sales at lunchtime Mardi Gras festival, and a school-wide coin drive, the club began accumulating the resources to purchase the showers. At the end of that year, ACHS NHS proudly signed a check to ship the showers to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Encouraged by this success and bolstered by the support of the staff and student population, NHS launched the Can the Principal Food Drive in February 2011. Partnering with a local Food Share office, NHS members began a campaign to collect canned food at the time of year when the food bank struggled to accumulate the resources to support tens of thousands of hungry people in the county. Initially hoping to contribute 2,500 cans, one per student at ACHS, NHS members had collected twice as many cans by the end of the month. To celebrate the successful food drive, all 5,000 cans were piled from floor to ceiling in Principal Lipman's office, effectively canning him for the day and forcing him to work in the hallway.
The Adolfo Camarillo High School NHS chapter exists for four main purposes: To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. Applicants are chosen based on the extent that their personal and academic résumé reflects all four characteristics. NHS membership selection extends well beyond the GPA; it is earned through participation and recognition in a variety of areas as well as the display of solid character in all activities.
Get Involved!
All ACHS students entering grades 10-12 who meet the GPA and additional requirements are encouraged to apply for NHS membership in the spring of each school year. Members are challenged to push the limits of their leadership capabilities, using the resources and friendships found through the club to pursue creative, effective projects that benefit the school and community.
